Chefs, Pranksters, and Mafia Members

Probably one of the most frequently asked questions that families of prospective students ask me when I give tours is what kids do for fun over the weekends here at the 'hurst.  I always mention the free Student Activities Council events on campus, but I also always tell them how just spending time doing random stuff with my friends usually ends up being my most fun and memorable nights.  With that being said, here's my weekend in a nutshell--

So on Friday night, my friend Eric and I decided to make quiche for dinner and death by chocolate for dessert; he's a really good cook and we both as college students truly appreciate yummy, homemade meals (and leftovers!), so it was really a win-win situation.  Quiche is one of my favorite meals that my mom makes me when I come home for so being able to make it at my apartment with a friend was really fun!  And as for the dessert, who doesn't love a good dessert just for the heck of it?!  Friday night also happened to be April Fools, so a few of my friends and I decided to prank some of our friends who were off campus.  For one of our friends, we put all his dirty laundry on his bed and for another friend, we decorated his entire room with Christmas lights!  Needless to say, Friday was a great night.

Now on Saturday night, my friends and I were kind of at a loss for what to do.  I had such a fun night on Friday that I wasn't sure that my friends and I were going to be able to pull another great night off.  Boy was I wrong.  Please don't laugh (okay, you can laugh), when I tell you what we did which resulted in such a good time... we played cards. Haha yep, cards.  It's this game called Mafia, that I guess is fairly well-known, but probably half of my friends, including myself didn't know how to play (it's kind of like Clue, except way more fun).  And unfortunately, I'm not exaggerating when I say that I didn't get back to my apartment until 3AM-- to top it off, I had a rude awakening when I woke up at noon the next day, haha.

So I think this weekend just goes to show that you can turn something like cooking dinner or playing cards, into a memorable weekend, just as long as you have good company =)  I for sure can't wait until next weekend (Spring Charity Ball and other fun things TBD), but now it's time to get some work done.

'tis the season to be campaigning...!?!

So as I mentioned in my last blog, this past week was all about running my campaign for the Mercyhurst Student Government secretary position.  If you had told me in high school that I was going to be so involved in student government, I would have thought you were crazy-- I actually had never participated in anything student government related until I got to college!

However, MSG proved to me that it's never too late to try something new and maybe out of your comfort zone.  Not only have I met some great friends, but you also get the inside scoop about what goes on at Mercyhurst-- not to mention, our administration truly values MSG as the student voice, so they're totally willing to make changes if they feel it will benefit the student body.

At midnight on Friday, I got a call from our current MSG President, congratulating me for winning the election!  I was ecstatic that all the hard work that my friends and I put into the campaigning and PR paid off!

At tomorrow's MSG meeting, myself, along with the rest of the new executive board, will be sworn in and it'll be official!  We will all definitely miss the seniors, however everybody's pumped up and ready to go for another great year ahead.

Here's to hoping that I don't get carpal tunnel ;)

Sunsets, Hockey, Glitter, and More Hockey =)

Hi Everyone!

So it's been a very, very fun week here at the 'hurst!  As I sit down to start homework and get ready for my week, I realize how little work I've done since Thursday and how although it's been nice, I have a very busy week ahead of me.  But let's get back to remembering the fun past few days... =)

Lake Erie Sunset

On Thursday, my friends and I decided to take advantage of the GORGEOUS weather and we went to Presque Isle.  Luckily, I didn't have too much homework and knew that spending an afternoon with my friends playing beach volleyball and capture the flags would be the better long term decision as opposed to staying home and doing homework/laundry. (Needless to say, I was definitely right).  There's so much to do at Presque Isle and it's definitely a place you need to go to if you're ever in town.  My friends and I decided to stay until sunset and then we went to eat breakfast for dinner-- what a perfect way to end a great day!  Rumor has it that a Lake Erie sunset is one of the best in the world; see for yourself...

On Friday, once my last class ended at 3:20, I volunteered to work at the NCAA Women's Division I Frozen Four through the Ambassador's Club.  This was such a cool event that I will definitely remember, even though our girl's team unfortunately did not make it to the final four.  My job was to check credentials and make sure that people were going to the right place.  The ambassador and I who were doing this happened to be doing this right next to the Wisconsin pep band, so it was really loud, but really cool to be so close to the school spirit!  Wisconsin University played Boston College where Wisconsin won and then later that night, Cornell played Boston University and Boston won.

On Saturday, I decided to complete half of my Service Learning for my Religious Persons and Traditions class.  We are required to complete ten hours of community service, but it's really cool because there are so many options, so students really have the ability to tailor that service to their interests.  I love working with children, so on Saturday, I volunteered my afternoon to work at the ExpERIEnce Children's Museum where there happened to be a Princess Party.  I painted nails, did hair, and made necklaces and although it was exhausting, it was a lot of fun but I literally got home and was literally covered in glitter-- good thing I love glitter!  Both of my roommates' parents were also in town, so after I got back, the roommates and I all went to dinner at a restaurant called Pufferbelly's, which is ironically right next to the children's museum that I volunteered at!

It's Official, WE WERE THERE!

On Sunday, my roommate Kylie, her parents and I went to the Frozen Four championship game.  I wasn't sure if I wanted to go because I knew I hadn't done work all week, but I'm so glad I went.  Wisconsin ended up winning and although Ky and I were kind of rooting for BU, we were pretty neutral with the outcome, especially since BU beat Mercyhurst and kept us out of the Frozen Four.  Regardless of who won though, it was a really good time and an excellent excuse to not do homework!

Well as my computer clock turns to 10:59PM and since I have a paper due for my 9:30AM fashion class, I think it's finally time to start work and prepare for a crazy week ahead.  I will be especially tied up with student government elections stuff because I'm trying to get elected as the new MSG secretary.  I find out the results on Friday so I will for sure be blogging about that next week.

An Ambassador Filled Weekend

Hi Everyone,

Well it's been another fun weekend here at the 'hurst, but unfortunately, Monday morning is quickly approaching and I still have reading to do!  Something particularly unique about this weekend was that I managed to do something Ambassador Club related Friday-Sunday, yay Ambassadors!

On Friday night, I had a game night at my apartment with my future roommates, which was so much fun!  We played reverse pictionary and this board game called Imaginiff, while eating cupcakes and chips; definitely a chill, but very fun night =) On Saturday, I gave a tour to two prospective families, which is something I always look forward to.

On Saturday, I also went fabric shopping with my friend Rachel because we're required to make a knit garment for Apparel II, note to all the prospective fashion merchandising majors out there-- about 50% of the incoming freshmen don't know how to sew, so don't worry if you don't know how, I didn't know how! Then I did some homework before I went over to my friend Jeremy's apartment to hang out.  On Sunday, me and all of the Ambassadors went to Spring Tea, which I mentioned in my last blog.

Spring Term & Spring Fever

Hi Everyone!

Sorry it's been a while... last week I was on Spring Break and decided to take a little blogging hiatus as well.  But now school is back in full swing and I'm three days into Spring Term, which is pretty hard to believe!  The classes I'm taking are Apparel II: Assembly and Production, Religious Persons and Traditions, and Statistics.  As of right now it's still kind of hard to judge how much I'll enjoy these classes, but hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.  I always find starting a new term so refreshing-- new classes, new people to meet, new schedule, etc.  Monday morning, the first day of classes, I woke up to the sun shining... and what's more refreshing than that?!

Although Spring Term has just begun, I already have quite a few things going on this month that I'm really looking forward to.  I used to despise March in high school because it always seemed to drag on forever (much like the crazy weather), but looking at my calendar, I'm going to have my own March Madness.  Spring Tea, a ceremony to say goodbye to the senior ambassadors and hello to the new ambassadors, is this Sunday, and then the Women's NCAA DI Frozen Four is the following weekend.  Student government elections are also in the middle of March, along with Laker Live-in and Major Day, which are great opportunities for any prospective high schooler who's interested in the school.  I will for sure need to stay on top of my game this term, especially with nice weather approaching (hopefully sooner than later!).

All We Wanted Was a Sandwich...

Hi Everyone!

I wasn't sure about what to blog about this week, but here's an amusing story about my friends and I that I think you'll not only enjoy, but will probably find helpful about life at the 'hurst...

So my friends and I were hanging out and decided that we were going to go out for dinner because we were hungry.  Let me tell you, trying to get three people to agree on a place to go is more difficult than you'd expect!  My one friend Joe wanted Chinese take out, but my friend Sarah and I don't like Chinese food, so we were against that idea.  Joe didn't want pizza or subs, so that was out of the question too. Not to mention, we didn't want to spend a lot of money, we've been living off of pasta (or if you're my friend Sarah, dry toast), and we were pretty hungry so we wanted something quick. 

We eventually decided on what I consider the holy grail of restaurants, Panera Bread.  So my two friends, and then three additional friends, and myself, all pile into a car and head to Panera Bread, which is about 10-15 minutes away on Peach Street, while bickering over what radio station to listen to and singing obnoxiously to songs we knew we could annoy each other with... yep, we're mature. 

We get to Panera Bread and I kid you not, the entire city of Erie must have decided that they wanted Panera Bread too.  Mind you, we probably didn't make the wisest decision to go to Panera Bread at 6:30PM on a Saturday night, but we still couldn't believe it.  We then all piled in the car, sang even louder, and drove along Peach St. to try and find a restaurant that wasn't packed.  Something to consider the next time you want to eat out on the weekend in Erie-- restaurants are always packed!  Eventually we went to Perkins (yay me for the recommendation!) and I ate a delicious omlette, homefries, and muffin.  It wasn't a sandwich from Panera, but I guess there's always next time =)

So that's my story and I hope you enjoyed it... I'm off to bed to hopefully get a good night's sleep to prepare for early mornings and late nights working on my projects and papers due!

This Week's Agenda

so many books, so little time!

Hi Everyone!

I'm hoping you find humor in the picture that I had my roommate Chelsea take for me when we both should have been doing research on our papers.  Pictured to the left is a stack of all of the library books that I've checked out of our library and would ideally like to get through for my History research paper.

I found it kind of funny that my room has slowly been turning into a mini library and that the stack of books are getting taller and taller.  However, that's not to say that my life has been all about books.  Last night was the Super Bowl and although I'm not a football follower, the game was an excellent excuse to step away from the academics to hang out and snack on pizza, chips-n-dip, and brownies with my friends.

As for this week's agenda, I will be tie-dyeing in my Textiles class, since we learned about different dyeing methods, eating lunch and talking with prospective students who might come to our school (I would encourage anyone who is looking at Mercyhurst to take advantage of these programs, they're really helpful and informative!), and choreographing a dance routine with my classmates for my Dance Appreciation class (we're dancing to Gloria Miranda's "Conga," it should be fun!), just to name a few things.  Needless to say, I'll be very busy and hopefully very productive!
